Why Agriculture matters in Uttarakhand's schools

Most students in the hill districts come from farming families. Agriculture as a school subject takes what they already know from home and adds the science — soil, water, seed, nursery, protected cultivation, post-harvest handling — that turns subsistence farming into an income. Uttarkashi has 9 of the 33 posts; Pauri, Chamoli, Dehradun and Tehri share most of the rest.

The teacher manages the school's agriculture lab and demonstration plot, runs practical sessions on cultivation and nursery work, and links students to local horticulture, dairy and floriculture opportunities. In senior classes the curriculum now includes hydroponics, organic growing and kisan drone operation.

What students learn

  • Soil, water and nutrient basics; irrigation methods
  • Seed selection, nursery raising and vegetable / floriculture cultivation
  • Protected cultivation — polyhouse and hydroponics basics
  • Organic farming practices and integrated pest management
  • Post-harvest handling, grading, storage and simple value addition
  • Farm records, costing and linking to markets and schemes
