Why Tourism & Hospitality matters in Uttarakhand's schools

Few states are as dependent on tourism as Uttarakhand. The Char Dham, Rishikesh, Nainital, Mussoorie, Auli and the trekking circuits bring millions of visitors every year, and hotels, homestays and restaurants across the hills need trained staff. Pithoragarh alone has 19 of the 62 posts.

The trade runs as two streams. Food & Beverage Service teaches restaurant operations, service sequence, guest handling and basic bar and beverage knowledge. Housekeeping teaches accommodation operations, room preparation, cleaning standards and guest room management. Either way, the teacher prepares students for a sector that hires locally.

What students learn

  • Food & Beverage: restaurant set-up, service sequence, order taking and guest interaction
  • Housekeeping: guest room preparation, cleaning standards, linen and inventory
  • Hygiene, safety and grooming standards of the hospitality industry
  • Front-office basics, communication and handling guest complaints
  • Tourism awareness — destinations, itineraries and responsible tourism
  • Employability Skills — communication, teamwork and customer service
